UX/Frontend Specialist

Summary

We're looking for a talented UX/frontend specialist to help direct the design of new features and improve the experience of existing ones. This person will have a passion for usability, an eye for design, and a flair for simplicity.

About the role

You will work with our close-knit group of planners, designers, integrators, and implementers. Mentoring a small team of front-end developers and designers, you will offer advice and guidance on UX and front-end best practices. Collaborating with our full-stack dev team, you will use Agile methodologies to ensure that maximum value is delivered to our customers at all times.

The role is a mix of UX, UI design, and web development. Working across our portfolio of sites you will look at ways we can improve our user experience. By analysing user flows and interaction patterns you will use industry best practices along with analytics data to determine incremental and pragmatic improvement plans. You will use split testing and customer feedback to ensure that improvements are data-driven.

Duties include:

  • Initiate and lead UI refactors that enable more intuitive user experiences
  • Develop wireframes, behavioural specs, and personas
  • Present simple, elegant, research-backed designs to complex workflows
  • Maintain a user-centered focus throughout the development process, ensuring that designs are usability-tested early and often
  • Act as a knowledge expert and provide advice and recommendations on UX-related issues

Additionally, you should be well-versed in front-end development practices and techniques, and be familiar with the topics of standards compliance, cross-browser compatibility, and graceful degradation. You must be highly skilled in HTML5 and CSS3, and your JavaScript programming experience should not be limited to jQuery. A strong grasp of MVC principles and AJAX techniques is essential. Ideally you will have some experience with client-side JS frameworks such as Knockout, Ember, Angular, or Backbone, and understand the trade-offs associated with their use. Experience or desire to learn more about automated client- and server-side testing and TDD is beneficial.

Our team structure is relatively flat, so the majority of decisions, both technical and otherwise, are made by consensus. You must enjoy communicating and collaborating with other team members as well as stakeholders at all levels. You will often be required to work on multiple projects, so time management and the ability to mentor team members while focusing on longer term goals will be key.

About the candidate

You will enjoy looking for problems and be pragmatic in finding solutions. We encourage all team members to take time during working hours for professional development, so successful candidates will be intellectually curious and able to drive their own self-development. You will be passionate about Agile and not afraid to tell us how we can continuously improve. You will work in a collaborative way with your colleagues using our core values of respect, courage, and freedom, to motivate each other to think big, experiment freely, and share ideas that enrich the whole team. You will care about standards and be comfortable conducting and receiving code reviews. You will not be afraid to ask questions and will take responsibility for ensuring that the finished product meets its requirements.
